Marcat Dance
Marcat Dance is the artistic home for the award-winning Spanish Choreographer Mario Bermudez together with the vision of North American Co-Director, Catherine Coury.
Marcat Dance, founded in 2016 by Spanish choreographer Mario Bermúdez and American dancer Catherine Coury, has become one of Spain’s most acclaimed contemporary dance companies. Based in the small rural village of Vilches in southern Spain, the company develops all its work in close dialogue with the surrounding landscapes before touring it to audiences around the world.
Guided by imagination, creative risk-taking, and research into dynamic physicality, Marcat Dance seeks to connect deeply with the human spirit. Its repertoire is distinguished by powerful physicality, rhythmic precision, and emotional depth, blending refined technique with raw, instinctive movement in works that explore human connection, nature, and ritual. The company’s highly celebrated evening-length productions include Afines (2025), Averno (2024), El Bosque (2022), Adama (2021), Huesos de Madera (2021), Anhelo (2019), and Alanda (2016). Highlights among its shorter works include Rhythm (2025), Garip (2019), Azahar (2018), and Duet Alanda (2016).
Since its inception, Marcat Dance has toured extensively across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, performing at major international festivals and venues such as Festival Itálica (Spain), Jacob’s Pillow (USA), Vanguard Body (China), Yokohama Collection (Japan), and the Cali International Dance Biennial (Colombia). In addition to the company’s own creations, Bermúdez’s choreography is commissioned by leading dance companies worldwide, further expanding Marcat Dance’s reach and influence.
The company is also deeply engaged in education and community work, offering workshops, masterclasses, and residencies both locally and internationally. In Vilches, Marcat Dance has become a cultural catalyst, bringing contemporary dance into a rural setting and fostering new artistic opportunities.
In 2020, the company founded Festival Vildanza, an international contemporary dance festival that brings artists and audiences together each summer in its hometown of Vilches.
